The plantations in the southern colonies became important to the economy. Some of the crops that were grown were tobacco, cotton, indigo and rice. The early plantations were built along rivers. The river was used as a way to transport crops to market. Crops were traded for other goods such as shoes, lace, thread, farm tools and dishes.
In today's Southern states farming is still part of the economy, but not to the extent it was during colonial times. Although agriculture is still a part of the economy, there are more people employed in manufacturing and service jobs.
